Inktober 2025

Inktober 2025 runs from October 1st through October 31st.

This year, as in 2024, I plan to post drawings on every odd-numbered day of October -- a total of sixteen drawings.

As I did in the past two years, the theme of my 2025 drawings is animal species classified as vulnerable, threatened or endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

This year's cover drawing is of a Red Wolf (Canis rufus), a canine native to the Southeastern United States.  It is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.

In addition to ink drawings, some of my drawings may be done with oil paint. Ink and paint have some things in common -- they both start out wet, and they are both available in a variety of colors. I enjoy creating some more colorful works while strengthening my painting skills.

Instead of following the suggested prompt list provided by Inktober.com, I created my own prompt list as shown here.

And now, the drawings .....

1 Oct
Black-Footed Ferret
ballpoint. Pigma Micron

The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, due to its restricted populations and threats like habitat loss, disease, and a decline in its primary food source, prairie dogs. While captive breeding and reintroduction efforts have established new wild populations across the western U.S., southern Canada, and northern Mexico, the species remains at high risk of extinction.

3 Oct
Ring-Tailed Lemur
ballpoint

The Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) is found in the dry forests, spiny bush, montane forest, mangroves, rocky outcrops, and one rainforest in southern and south-western Madagascar, and in one humid forest in south-eastern Madagascar. Habitat loss, hunting, and live-capture for the illegal in-country pet trade are the greatest causes of concern.

5 Oct
Javan Rhinocerous
ballpoint

The Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus), of Indonesia, is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The long-term cause of population decline is mainly attributable to the excessive demand for rhino horn and other products for Chinese and allied medicine systems, as well as food competition with other animals.

7 Oct
Sumatran Tiger
ballpoint, Pigma brush

The Sumatran tiger is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, placing it at high risk of extinction in the wild due to threats like habitat loss from deforestation, poaching for body parts, and reduced prey availability. As a distinct subspecies (Panthera tigris sondaica), its population is confined to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and faces severe challenges in its tropical forest and swamp habitats.

9 Oct
Yangtze finless porpoise
oil on canvas

The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis), the world’s only freshwater porpoise, is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  The main threats to the species are habitat degradation from dam construction and sand mining, overfishing, bycatch in fishing gear, and pollution from industrial, agricultural, and domestic sources. These human-induced activities reduce the porpoises' food supply, destroy their homes, cause direct injury or death, and fragment their populations, leading to critically low numbers and a high risk of extinction.

11 Oct
Red Panda
ballpoint

Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  It is found in Nepal, China, Myanmar, India and Bhutan.

The major threats are habitat loss and fragmentation; habitat degradation; and physical threats. These are all compounded by the region's increasing human population; climate change and natural disasters. Each country enforces its own laws and regulations to protect the species. However, in some cases, enforcement is inadequate.

13 Oct
Tapanuli Orangutan
ballpoint

Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), of Sumatra, has been listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Primary threats are illegal clearing of protected forests, hunting and killing during crop conflict, and trade in young orangutans.

15 Oct
Saola
ballpoint

Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), of Laos and Vietnam, is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Population estimates have been extremely difficult due to the animal’s secretive and elusive behavior, but total Saola population is believed to be less than 750. The decline is largely from intense hunting pressure, accelerated by continued opening of its habitat to increased human access (mainly through road construction).

17 Oct
African Penguin
ballpoint

African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  Population declines have been attributed to food shortages largely resulting directly or indirectly from various human disturbances.

19 Oct
Amur Leopard
ballpoint

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is native to the Primorye region of southeastern Russia and northern China. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.  It is threatened by poaching of both individuals and prey species, habitat loss and deforestation. Its natural habitat is threatened by forest fires and construction of new roads.

21 Oct
Giant Golden Mole
ballpoint

Giant Golden Mole (Chrysospalax trevelyani), of South Africa, is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. A major threat is habitat loss as a result of urbanization, as well as livestock overgrazing and forest clearance through timber harvesting.

23 Oct
African Wild Dog
ballpoint

African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus) is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their decline has been related to their limited ability to inhabit human-dominated landscapes, with few prey, hostile farmers and ranchers, snare traps, high speed traffic, and domestic dogs harboring potentially fatal diseases.
